Peace Building and Conflict Mitigation

80 Women Leaders Trained on Conflict Prevention and Management Resolution and Human Rights 10 ex-militia leaders taken through Trauma Healing and Counselling sessions Over 50 peace forums held in local villages to foster civil peace and cohesive coexistence. Resolution of 2 major cross-border conflicts in the western region of Kenya Pokot vs Karamojong’ | Pokot vs Turkana) 1 community market (The Burnt Forest Peace Market) has been constructed following peacebuilding and mediation efforts by RWPL; this common market has become a symbol of unity and peace that has allowed previously antagonistic ethnic communities to share resources
Programs

Leadership and Governance

Over 5000 youth bunges (local youth parliaments) have been formed to serve as an open and safe space to develop leadership skills, promote transparent decision making and promote collective voice on all matters affecting the youth. 1328 people (713 males, 615 females) have benefitted from Life Skills and Entrepreneurship Trainings in West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties. 95, 510 citizens have been reached with quality civic education in 28 wards of Uasin Gishu County RWPL mobilized 200 women and influenced them into taking part in the public participation forums regarding the development of the CIDP of Bungoma County. This resulted in gender-sensitive programs being included in the 5-year plan. 35 women aspirants have been trained on leadership, effective campaign strategies, key factors in elective processes, preparing for party nominations and general election, skills for women in political leadership

Programs

Women Human Rights Advocacy

341 students in institutions of higher learning have gained knowledge on bodily integrity and sexual harassment RWPL spearheaded the formulation and development of the Strategic Plan of Bungoma County’s Gender Technical Working Group Over 180 police and judicial officers have been trained on responding to SGBV Over 500 women bunges (local women parliaments) have been formed representing over 10,000 women across 7 Counties, through which women are trained on human rights, women’s bodily integrity including mainstreaming the UN Resolution 1325 RWPL spearheaded the formation of Gender Technical Working Groups in Uasin Gishu and West Pokot counties; these organs are tasked with ensuring gender equality in the counties.
RWPL’s flagship initiative, “Adopt-A-Cop” has since been adopted into the CIDP of Bungoma County which plans to replicate itThe initiative sought to strengthen the collaboration between the community and the police in the fight against gender-based violence. RWPL has supported the development of the SGBV bill in Bungoma County RWPL’s engagements with the councils of elders in Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties have led to women being included in the membership of the councils which for ages past have been a preserve of the men. RWPL led the formation of VAWG clubs in 4 primary schools in Bungoma County (Musikoma, Bungoma DEB, Cheptais and Kongoli primary schools). These clubs act as safe spaces where the pupils feel free to share about issues to do with VAWG 15 journalists have been trained on gender-sensitive reporting and the Kenya National Action Plan on women, peace and security

Women Economic Empowerment

26 self-help groups constituting of victims of the Mt. Elgon clashes have benefitted from economic capacity-building trainings and seed grants (Ksh. 20,000 per group)

Over 150 students have been supported to complete their secondary school education. Over 30 students have been supported to complete education tertiary institutions Over 20 young women have been mentored on leadership and management RWPL has supported 5 teenage girls who have gone back to school to pursue their dreams

Who We Are

Grassroot, Women Led

Rural Women Peace Link is a grassroots, women-led organization that mobilizes, influences and promotes the participation of local women in peace building, governance and development through collaboration and networking with diverse actors. We focus on the grassroots women because they are largely marginalized in as far as decision making is concerned.
